![]() 67 football pitches full of TUI trees Since autumn 2009 the TUI Wood has been taking shape on Majorca Through the winding lanes of the old town, past the yachting marina and along the Playa de Palma indeed the diversity of the route around the TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca is stunningly captivating. A forest floor is the only surface that the runners in the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ don’t get to experience. But that could change in the future, because TUI and the Balearic Environment Ministry are working together on a reforestation project for Majorca the TUI Wood. In the Llevant nature park near Alcudia an area of 48 hectares is being planted with olive and pines trees that is the equivalent to 67 football pitches. In the past a forest fire destroyed the majority of the vegetation there. Booking opens soon for trees Every TUI customer can make the island a little bit green by donating ten euros to “adopt“ a tree, which will be planted in the TUI Wood. Back in June 2009 Dr Harald Zeiss, head of Quality and Environmental Management at TUI Deutschland, “booked“ the first tree. To commemorate this his name, together with those of future donators, will be immortalised on a plaque next to the visitors centre. The ground-breaking ceremony for the TUI Wood took place on 26 October 2009 under the auspices of TUI Deutschland Chief Executive Dr Volker Böttcher. Future trees will be planted over a period of five years section by section. As soon as the wood is established TUI will offer a hiking tour through it together with ASI. Working together for a greener Majorca TUI and the Balearic Environment Ministry are working close together to push forward the TUI Wood project: “This is a unique project for preserving and fostering the environment, one which benefits both Majorcans as well as holidaymakers,“ asserts a convinced Harald Zeiss, head of Environmental Management at TUI. The central idea behind the project is the conservation of the natural forests on Majorca as well as climate protection. “Such an undertaking for preserving our environment is unique and underlines the close relationship between the Balearics and TUI. We are looking forward to welcoming our guests very soon in this new section of the nature park,“ said Miquel Àngel Grimalt i Vert, the Balearic Environment Minister. |
